The Maryborough Courthouse: What to Expect on Your First Day

Walking through the doors of the Maryborough Courthouse can be an intimidating experience. Whether you are appearing for a family law matter, a criminal law matter, a domestic violence case, a traffic offence or a civil dispute, the "fear of the unknown" can often be extremely unsettling for those who are required to appear before Maryborough Court for the first time.

At John Willett Lawyers, we believe that being prepared is the first step toward a successful outcome. Here is our local guide to navigating your day at the Maryborough Courthouse.

Where is the Maryborough Courthouse?

The courthouse is located at 170 Richmond Street, Maryborough QLD 4650.

  • Arrival Time: Aim to arrive at least 30 minutes prior to your scheduled time. This allows for parking, security clearances and for you to make yourself known to the court.

  • Parking: There is street parking available on Richmond Street, Wharf Street and surrounding blocks, but it can fill up quickly on "Call-Over” and Domestic Violence first return days (busy mornings when many cases are listed at once). Sometimes on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays the immediate vicinity to the court precinct can be filled with lots of other people waiting to appear.

Maryborough Court Security and Entry

Upon entry, you will need to pass through a security. There is a body detection process to check for prohibited items.

  • Prohibited Items: Ensure you do not have any sharp objects, tools, metal or liquids.

  • The Daily List:  Maryborough Courthouse is a Heritage Listed Courthouse. There are no electronic monitors displaying the list. You may be able to check the "Daily Law List" if printed in the foyer to confirm which courtroom your matter is in (e.g., Magistrate Court 1 or 2).

Depending on which courtroom is running, it will either be in the courtroom facing the Queens Park Band Hall Rotunda accessible by the side veranda, or the upstairs courtroom accessible via the registry foyer. If no list is displayed in the foyer or on the veranda, you can check which court you will be in with registry staff.

Maryborough Courtroom Etiquette

The Maryborough Courthouse is a place of tradition and respect. To make the best impression:

  • Dress Code: Wear neat, professional attire. Clothing such as "business casual" shows the Magistrate you take the matter seriously. Singlets, midriff tops and thong type footwear should be avoided.

  • Conduct: Turn off your mobile phone before entering the gallery. When the Magistrate enters or leaves the room, you must stand. Make sure sunglasses and hats are removed from your head before entering into the Courtroom area.

Finding Your Maryborough Lawyer

If we are representing you, we will usually arrange a specific meeting point with you well in advance of the court date as part of our case planning. This is often at the foyer of our Wharf Street Lawyers office where we walk across the road together to the Maryborough Courthouse. The walk from our Maryborough Lawyers office to the Courtroom takes approximately 30 seconds and our office is located less than 50 metres from the court precinct. If you are appearing self represented, you may need to speak with the Duty Lawyer or the Court Registrar to "check-in" so the court knows you are present.

Why Local Representation Matters

Every courthouse has its own flow, processes and nuances. By choosing a firm with deep roots in the Wide Bay Community, you aren’t just getting legal advice, you’re getting a team that understands the local Maryborough Court system and who have appeared in thousands of matters there over the last decade.
